Keeping Your Family Safe Online During the Holidays

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been slowly filling with a warm holiday glow since Thanksgiving. After all, what better time of year is there than the holidays. Most people only get to see their extended family once or twice a year, at the most. Granted, they might have you pulling your hair out by New Years, but that doesn’t make the holidays any less exciting, right? Indeed, the holidays are the perfect time of year to reflect on the things that are going well in your life, to relax in the comfort of your friends and family, and to truly feel the warmth of the season.

Unfortunately, not everyone shares my Capraesque vision of the holidays. In fact, while most of us are sitting back and enjoying a glass of eggnog or stringing up holiday lights, cybercriminals and identity thieves are busy prowling the web looking for ways to exploit our Internet security. With a vast increase in online shopping, credit card information becomes less secure; because so many people share their holiday vacation plans online, the likelihood of home break-ins increases; and, perhaps worst of all, Internet scammers prey on the good will of the holiday season, tricking people into donating money to phony causes.

Just because there are criminals out there looking to take advantage of the season, however, doesn’t mean you have to be one of their victims. To help make sure no cyber-Grinches can get you, we will be sharing holiday safety tips throughout the week here at the ReputationDefender Blog and on Twitter. Just like Macaulay Culken in Home Alone, you have to protect your house during the holidays, so make sure to check back tomorrow for our first post!
